NST: Gentle Pain Relief from Down Under

We all experience pain at one time or another in life. Perhaps
an occasional tension headache, or a back strain after being
a “weekend warrior.” For some, pain seems to be a way of life:
dealing with the long-term effects of arthritis, migraine, TMJ
syndrome, or fibro-myalgia. Fortunately, there is a new
option for dealing with both short- and long-term pain conditions:
Neurostructural Integration Technique, or NST.
NST is a unique form of bodywork with origins in Australia. Using the most
advanced procedures of Tom Bowen (who lent his name to Bowen Technique),
physiologist Michael Nixon-Livy developed and refined this method into an effective
and organized system. Other types of manual therapies focus on manipulating,
massaging, or stretching the bones, joints, and muscles of the body. NST, on the
other hand, is like a neurological massage: Gentle movements across major
muscle and tendon groups send a message to the brain that leads to the body re-
adjusting itself over the course of the hours and even days following a treatment.
NST has several advantages in the field of pain relief therapies. Because it is so
gentle, it is better tolerated by people with widespread or severe pain than more
aggressive manual techniques. In most cases, only one visit per week is required,
rather than multiple times per week. This allows adequate time for the body to
respond in between sessions. Many people find significant pain relief in as little as
3-5 sessions; some report resolution of their pain condition in that span. For
chronic degenerative conditions, a multifaceted approach is often necessary for
long-term management; NST can play a key role in such a program.
In addition to effectively treating neck and back pain, joint pain, headache, TMJ
syndrome, and injuries, NST has reportedly produced improvement in visceral
conditions such as asthma and menstrual problems.
I have personally seen the power of NST in the patients I have treated. A young
man who had been in a recent motor vehicle accident had complete resolution of
symptoms within three visits. A 42-year-old woman with frozen shoulder (a
notoriously stubborn condition) regained near-normal range of motion within a few
sessions of NST plus home exercises. A 54-year-old woman found resolution of
chronic headaches in a matter of weeks.
These results are not uncommon. From infants to the elderly, NST provides gentle,
rapid, safe, and effective pain relief.
