Mouth-Body Connection by Dr. Larry Litman
We tend to think that the dentist’s only function is to help
keep our teeth and gums healthy.  What dentists have
suspected for a long time is now confirmed:  disease in
the mouth is hazardous to your health.  More and more
medical research shows that a number of life-threatening
illnesses may get their start from the bacteria associated
with gum disease.

Most of us strive to live healthy lives—if we don’t, we at least have the good sense
to feel guilty about not trying hard enough.  A large percentage of the population
lives and breathes fitness.  They aim high and get on target with power walks, and
a menu of body-pampering services. They eat only low fat foods, do regular breast
checks and lather on sunscreens.  But what most fitness-driven consumers don’t
understand is the potentially deadly connection between diseases of the mouth,
gum and bone, and overall health.

Medical research is saying that when we neglect our dental health, the devastating
consequences directly affect how quickly we lose our health, our good looks and
damage our vital organs, and no yoga workout or biceps curls or cholesterol
blasters can restore vitality when the body is compromised by gum disease.

The bottom line is that the mouth is the gateway to body and health.  Your dentist
acts as the gatekeeper, protecting you against gum and bone infection and
preventing harmful bacteria from entering the bloodstream and attacking vital
organs.  That’s quite a mouthful!
